Student and Resident Orientation Guide

Welcome to the Medical Profession

Congratulations on choosing a career in medicine. As a physician, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on both your community and the lives of your patients.

Your medical studies and residency are the first steps towards a long and fulfilling career, and the New Brunswick Medical Society is here to support you every step of the way.

Medical Students

New Brunswick has two medical training programs: Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, located at the University of New Brunswick campus in Saint John; and Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick, located at the Université de Moncton (delivered in partnership with the University of Sherbrooke). Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick accepts 40 students per year. Centre de formation médicale accepts 36 students annually.

New Brunswick also sponsors three medical school seats at both Université Laval and Université de Montréal.

Financial Assistance

The New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation is Canada’s only private registered charity dedicated to attracting and retaining New Brunswick’s future health care providers.

The Foundation raises funds to extend return-to-service scholarships to New Brunswick medical and allied health professional students, ensuring a pipeline of future physicians are ready to practice in New Brunswick.

Please visit their website for more information.

Future of Medicine

During the first few weeks of your first year of medical school in New Brunswick, the NBMS will host Future of Medicine receptions in Moncton and Saint John to welcome new medical students and help them build connections with other medical learners and local physicians.

Student Leadership Award

The Student Leadership Award is awarded to students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, commitment and dedication within and/or outside the medical community.

The award is presented during the Celebration of Medicine event each spring.

Ambassador Program

The Ambassador Program provides funding for a select number of medical students and residents to attend the NBMS Health Summit, a two-day networking and educational conference which takes place at Saint Andrews-by-the-Sea in the Spring. The program covers travel, accommodations, and meals for selected participants from Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick, Memorial University, Université de Montréal, and Université Laval as well as residents from around the province to attend.

Residents

Medical residents receive all benefits and services of the NBMS. During this part of medical education, collective agreement and employment interests are represented by various associations:

These associations negotiate and create collective agreements for remuneration, benefits, and rights.

Financial Assistance

The Government of New Brunswick offers recruitment incentives to all new physicians entering NB’s healthcare system. These are also available to medical residents in their last two or three years of training (family medicine residents in their final two years and other specialty residents in their final three years.)

These incentives are tied to accepting an offer within the province and are outlined in official Department of Health program guidelines here.

Iype/Wilfred Resident Award

The NBMS celebrates excellence in medicine at all stages of a medical career. The Iype/Wilfred Resident Award is awarded to residents who have demonstrated outstanding achievement during their residency training in New Brunswick. More specifically, this award recognizes achievements in research, professionalism, compassion, and caring.

The award is presented during the Celebration of Medicine event each fall.

Ambassador Program

The Ambassador Program provides funding for a select number of medical students and residents to attend the NBMS Health Summit, a two-day networking and educational conference which takes place at Saint Andrews-by-the-Sea in the Spring. NBMS Programs and Benefits

NBMS Practice Support

The NBMS Practice Support Program supports New Brunswick physicians and their teams in making changes to optimize their current processes and create more effective, healthier practices. This includes tailored support and programming to help physicians enhance processes within their clinics, creating a better provider and patient experience and ultimately improving the quality of patient care.

While the Practice Support Program primarily serves practicing physicians, some elements benefit learners moving toward practice, especially residents preparing to transition to practice. For more information and a full suite of practice support tools and resources, visit the NBMS Practice Support page.

NBMS Wellness

NBMS Wellness is a free, confidential service for physicians, residents, students, and their family members who need assistance.

NBMS Wellness provides support to members and their families who may be coping with the demands of practice, relationships, addiction, and other mental health or life challenges.

NBMS Wellness offers tailored counselling solutions delivered by an extensive qualified network of counsellors in communities across the province. NBMS Wellness also offers peer-to-peer support and assistance in matching physicians with a family doctor though our MD4MD program.

NBMS Funding for Medical Learners

The NBMS provides annual funding allocated to medical student classes and resident training sites to support team-bonding activities such as group outings or shared experiences that strengthen peer connection and well-being.

In addition, the NBMS provides funding for learner-led initiatives that promote leadership, community engagement, and social responsibility, including projects such as the DMNB Kids Run Club, inter-generational dinners, and outreach initiatives in local schools and communities.

These supports help foster strong learner communities while encouraging meaningful connection beyond the clinical environment.
