President's Profile

Dr. Carl Boucher

2026-2027 President of the New Brunswick Medical Society

Dr. Carl Boucher is a family physician who has been practising in the Acadian Peninsula since 2009. For the first several years of his career, he maintained a general practice consisting of office-based longitudinal care, emergency medicine, and hospitalist services. In 2011, he transitioned to full-time emergency medicine, a role he held until 2018. From 2018 onward, he gradually reintroduced office-based longitudinal care and hospitalist responsibilities, ultimately discontinuing emergency medicine practice in 2022. He is currently the owner of a family medicine clinic in Caraquet, New Brunswick, and is in the process of developing a Collaborative Care Team in partnership with the Vitalité Health Network.

Born and raised in Caraquet, New Brunswick, Dr. Boucher completed his pre-medical studies at the Université de Moncton (Shippagan campus) in 2003. He obtained his medical degree from the Université de Sherbrooke in 2007, followed by a residency in family medicine at the Dieppe Family Medicine Unit. He returned to his hometown of Caraquet in 2009, where he currently resides with his wife and their two children.

Dr. Boucher has long been a strong advocate for healthcare delivery in the Acadian Peninsula and has held multiple leadership roles throughout his career. His experience includes serving as Chief of Staff of the Acadian Peninsula Emergency Department, Chief of Staff for the Acadian Peninsula Family Medicine Department, and as a member of the Acadie–Bathurst Local Medical Advisory Committee (LMAC). He also served as the rural representative on the Vitalité COVID-19 Medical Steering Committee.

Since 2018, Dr. Boucher has been very active with the New Brunswick Medical Society (NBMS). He initially joined the Board of Directors as the representative for the Acadie–Bathurst region, where he completed two consecutive three-year terms. During his tenure, he served as Vice-Chair of the Governance Review Committee, which led to significant modernization of the NBMS structure and governance model, including substantial changes to board and committee composition. In 2024 and 2025, he was a member of the negotiating committee responsible for a landmark Physician Services Agreement, which is expected to transform primary care delivery in New Brunswick. He was named President-Elect of the NBMS in 2024.

Throughout his board service, Dr. Boucher has consistently advocated for rural healthcare across New Brunswick. As President, he intends to continue prioritizing the improvement of healthcare delivery in rural regions. He also aims to continue promoting and advancing the benefits of the Physician Services Agreement negotiated last year.
