New Brunswick’s doctors ‘incredibly proud’ of New Brunswicker’s election to CMA President
Native New Brunswicker Dr Chris Simpson has taken the helm of the Canadian Medical Association, the national organisation that represents more than 80,000 doctors.
“We’re very pleased that a young man from Nackawic would become the President of the CMA,” said Dr Lynn Hansen, the President of the New Brunswick Medical Society. “While he’s been out of the province for some time, he’s travelled to see us at a number of local meetings and visits his family whenever he’s here – we have a special connection with him.”
Dr. Simpson was born in Moncton, was raised in Nackawic, obtained his undergraduate degree at UNB and even played with the Thomists. After going to medical school at Dalhousie University, he intended to set up a family practice in Nackawic but the government decided to limit the number of practicing physicians by reducing physician “billing numbers,” a system still in effect today in New Brunswick.
Instead, he pursued cardiology training in Kingston, Ontario and eventually became the Chief of Cardiology at Kingston General Hospital, the head of Canada’s Wait Time Alliance, and a Professor at Queen’s University.
“He has become an incredible medical leader, researcher, and professor, and continues to be focused on issues that matter to patients,” said Dr Hansen. “His work to reduce wait times, provide cutting-edge care, and teach the next generation of doctors is inspirational. We’re incredibly proud of him.”
Doctors from New Brunswick will be in Ottawa at CMA’s General Council until Thursday.
