The NBMS is legislatively authorized to negotiate options for alternate funding plans (AFPs) where appropriate. AFPs are negotiated on behalf of groups of physicians to ensure full-service coverage of a specialty service within a fixed pool of funding.

These contracts are negotiated by the NBMS, on behalf of physicians, with the Department of Health and the regional health authorities and require the agreement of all parties on terms of service delivery and payment.
