New Brunswick Medical Society announces new President from Saint John

FREDERICTON – The New Brunswick Medical Society named Dr. John Whelan as their new President for 2015-2016 on Saturday at their Annual General Meeting in Miramichi.

Dr. Whelan is a diagnostic radiologist at the Saint John Regional Hospital, and will take over duties from Miramichi’s Dr. Camille Haddad, a family doctor.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the work of my predecessor to promote healthier lifestyles,” said Dr. Whelan. “The Medical Society has already done a significant amount of work on this, but we as a province still have a long way to go to improve our health.”

Another key issue for Dr. Whelan is the complex topic of seniors care, which has dominated recent headlines and been an important concern for health care providers and politicians alike, along with many members of the public.

“We had a very good turnout at our Patient Dialogue on Seniors Care recently in Fredericton, so much so we even had to bring in extra chairs,” said Dr. Whelan. “Over 200 people attended, which I think shows just how important this issue is to the public.”

Dr. Whelan received his medical degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Following one year of general practice in Moncton and three years of emergency medicine at the Moncton City Hospital, he moved to Halifax to complete a four-year residency in Diagnostic Radiology. Since 1989, he has practiced at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Dr. Whelan holds an appointment as Associate Professor in Diagnostic Radiology at Dalhousie University, and serves as Education and Residency Training Director at his hospital. He has been active with the New Brunswick Medical Society for over 20 years.
