Statement on the Independence of Chief Medical Officer of Health
The New Brunswick Medical Society welcomes the proposed amendments to the Public Health Act, which recognize the critical importance of science-based, transparent decision-making and affirm the essential role of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) in safeguarding the health of New Brunswickers.
Physicians firmly believe that public trust in the CMOH depends on the role being independent and free from political influence. These amendments take meaningful steps in that direction by allowing the CMOH to issue and publish written directives and to table an annual, independent report to the legislative assembly. These measures will help ensure that public health decisions are guided by evidence, clearly communicated, and made in the best interest of the public.
The NBMS was pleased to be consulted on this file. Physicians have long advocated for strong, independent public health leadership. We commend the government for this initiative and look forward to the successful passage of this important legislation.
