Leadership

Meet a Physician Leader

Dr. Gerald Maloney

Recipient of the 2012 Order of Merit

According to Dr. Gerald Maloney, a physician’s role is much more than maintaining the physical health of patients. His passion for the health—economic, social and spiritual— of the whole community has made him a valued contributor to organized medicine and the larger community of New Brunswick.

Born and raised in Saint John, Dr. Maloney entered the pre-med program at St. Mary’s University before completing his medical degree at Dalhousie University Medical School.  Returning to New Brunswick in the late 1970’s, he practiced in the small coastal community of St. Martin’s until 2010.

Dr. Maloney has held a number of leadership roles within organized medicine. He has served as president of the Saint John Medical Society, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society in 2006-2007 and served two separate terms as chair of the NBMS Board of Directors (2001-2005 and 2010-2011). He was a founding member of the NBMS General Practice Council and is also a former member of the NBMS Finance & Staffing Committee, Worksafe Coordinating Committee, Facilities Committee and Economics Committee.  As past chair of the Negotiating Committee, Dr. Maloney played a pivotal role in negotiating, advising, and advocating on behalf of his colleagues in relation to many issues. He currently serves on the newly formed NBMS Governance Committee and represents the Atlantic region on the CMA’s Political Action Committee.

Dr. Maloney serves as a Rural Family Medicine Preceptor with the Memorial University Medical School, as well as a member of the Department of Family Practice Executive Committee. He was a member of the Program Management Committee at the Saint John Regional Hospital and currently fundraises for the New Brunswick Medical Education Trust as a member of their campaign cabinet.

Throughout his career in the Saint John region, Dr. Maloney has taken on leadership roles in a number of community initiatives. He served as the Medical Director of St. Martin’s Ambulance and is a team physician for the Saint John Sea Dogs. He has also given his time to the St. Martin’s Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Business and Community Development Committee of the Saint John Board of Trade.

A long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, Dr. Maloney and his wife Colleen served as co-chairs of the Saint John Regional Hospital Festival of Trees fundraiser. He and his family continually maintain their connection to community through involvement with their church. Dr. Maloney is a regular lector at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and served as president of the parish council. He and his wife Colleen have four children: Erin, Corinne, Cailin, and Nicholas and four grandchildren.
